The popularity of the game of golf has increased tremendously over the past forty-five years, giving us great champions like Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods and world-renowned courses like Pinehurst, St. Andrews, Augusta National and the Blue Monster at Doral.

Why should playing golf have taken off like that? I think it has to be because by playing golf you are being active outdoors with friends or colleagues competing in a leisurely game that you can never perfect.

Your scorecard, over time, will demonstrate your improvement, which keeps you playing time and time again.

This is the first lesson for the novice golfer who doesn’t know anything about golfing.

Golf is played on an eighteen-hole course. Each hole has its own “par” (value), which is the combined number of tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short hits as you approach the green), and putts (on the green) you should need to take.

‘Par’ is determined by the length and difficulty of each hole and can range from three to six. So, if you get the golf ball in the hole in six shots on a ‘par six’ hole, you ‘made par’; if you make it in five, it’s a “birdie” or seven, a “bogie”.

‘Hazards’ or obstructions are usually placed before all the holes. Ponds, sand bunkers and trees are positioned in such a way as to make it more difficult to reach the green. Novice golfers should try to find a course with fewer hazards, which is therefore easier to play.

Players keep their own score of the total number of shots taken for each hole. After the eighteenth hole, they add up their scores and the one with the lowest is the winner.

Please don’t take your score or your lack of skill to heart when you are a beginner golfer, because, although the professionals make it look simple, it takes many years to play the game well.

A good tip is to get the basics right from the start by taking a few lessons from the course ‘pro’, because then you will learn the correct posture and swing.

If you are going on a reality game show like American Idol or Dancing with the Stars, it is a wise concept to give some thought to how to impress the judges. There are several fundamental tactics you can take.

The first is to simply do your best and hope for the best and the other is to research the likes and dislikes of the judges; work out from previous series which judges are the most influential and then endeavour to please the two most influential judges.

The second alternative means devious means and lots of research but do not think that it has never been tried. Whether or not the tactic was successful, we shall almost certainly never know, but given the immediate rewards and a lifetime of success, it is not surprising that contestants employ coaches and consultants to advise them win.

Mum and Dad bringing their hopeful teenage boy or girl down to the auditions is not how winners become successful any more. It takes planning, perseverance, research, diligence and rehearsals. Lots of rehearsal.

If you go for the first alternative, then, it is not wise to simply sing your favourite song. The judges must have heard ‘I Did It My Way’ thousands of times at audition and Frank Sinatra did a version that is fairly difficult to better.

Strive to find a song that is unusual, but also a song that you are able to identify with and sing well. This involves research and rehearsals, but it is not worth turning up at the auditions unless you put lots of effort into your song. The competition is simply too strong.

Nerves are a big difficulty for most people, even numerous professionals, so the judges will have seen that all before. you have to try to learn to cope with your nerves before the audition.

The best method of doing that is by singing in front of audiences. So, go to karaoke nights, do guest spots at bars, sing at parties, enter singing competitions, sing in the bath with the window open. Do everything you can to become used to performing in front of an audience.

This obviously takes time, so give yourself at least a year before you apply to attend an audition for a TV talent show, whichever field of entertainment you are interested in. If you are fairly inexperienced at performing and you have no-one among your friends and family who can advise you, maybe you ought to consider getting in a coach to advise you.

You will probably just have one crack at the big time, so do not squander it. Emotionally, you will feel drained if you do not make it past the auditions, so do not let that happen to you without giving yourself every opportunity of succeeding.

It is difficult to see so many children literally overburdening their bodies at such young ages by being overweight. These kids cannot run, jump or play with other children because their bodies just will not permit them to do so. Dieting is a necessity for these kids in spite of our best efforts to protect them from the self-esteem problems that often go together with obesity.

If you have a child that is well outside the average weight range for his or her age, you are the one who must take the required steps to ensure that they lose those excess pounds in order to live a life that is as close to average as they can. The first thing you have to do however is consult your child’s physician about the best possible course of action to look after the health of your child.

Put quite bluntly however, if you do not make the effort to assist your child to shed those pounds you are placing the health of your child at risk. We do not let our kids play in the street, we do not let them run around with guns, why on Earth would we permit them to commit suicide by chocolate? If you have a child that is overweight, the following advice should help you and them with their dieting.

First of all, do not make food a penalty or a reward. Food is part of the problem with your children and you should not use it against them. Instead, introduce them to healthy alternatives. Do not keep junk food in the house and do not let them buy lunch at school. Pack their lunches for school so that you know what they are getting. If you do not give them junk food to take away and they cannot have it when at home, they will be better off.

Incorporate healthy snacks into your family’s eating plan rather than junk food. Fresh fruit, chopped vegetables, nuts, and frozen yogurt are good healthy snacks for your kids. When in doubt, consult the food pyramid but watch calories in the process. You want your children to eat a well balanced diet and stop eating junk food and sweets.

Cut out the juices and pop. This may be a huge problem in your house but the best gift you can offer your child is a deep and long-lasting appreciation of water. Water works to make their stomachs feel full and keeps them hydrated for the added exercises you should be introducing into their lives.

Make them take dance lessons, take up a sport, or simply get out and run around the yard. The worst thing you can do is to allow your children to become comatose television, computer, or video game zombies. Get them out of the house and get them active. This helps in two ways. First of all, they are not eating if they are outside playing and having a good time. Second, they are burning calories as they play which is a huge bonus in the dieting process of your children.

As your child begins to lose weight, you should start to notice a very big change in not only the way he or she bears his or herself but also in his or her relations with others. Your child will notice a restored self-confidence as the pounds come off and the teasing at school stops.

If you are at a total loss as to how to help your child take the weight off there are camps that are intended specifically to deal with weight issues and building self-esteem in children aged 7-19. A camp may be just the answer you are looking for. Another thing to consider is to lead by example. If you do not eat junk food, if you are active, and if you do not engage in emotional over-eating your child will not be learning those behaviours from you or having them strengthened by you.
