When getting your body building workout together, you’ll need to think about your lower and upper body. For the lower body, you will be targeting: quadriceps, hamstrings and calves. Hit these muscles and you’ll reach the goal of building both strength and lean muscle mass where it counts.

Luckily, many exercises will hit all three of these muscles. Squats concentrate on the quads, and paleontologists think T-Rex did plenty. (Don’t look that up.) To do squats, grab a loaded barbell while standing at the squat rack and place it behind your head, resting across your shoulders. Squat down and keep your back straight. Other quad exercises are the lunge, leg presses and leg extensions.

For your hamstrings, you can use 3 different exercises in your body building workout. First, you can perform the leg curl. You lie on your stomach on a leg curl machine bench and simply curl the weight up with your legs. You can also try the stiff-legged dead lift and the dumbbell version of the same.

Last on the list are the calves. Throw in the calf-raises into your body building workout, giving you the power to master your jump. There are many variations possible, since it’s so simple to target these muscles. The standing calf raises, seated calf raise, leg press calf extension and the standing one-legged calf raise are all essentially the same motion. You just support the weight by pointing your toes, lifting your heel off the ground.

Treat your body building workout as a way to grow evenly. Don’t forget your legs in the process of getting into shape – you need to support your torso with solid legs and not just work out your upper half.

A great way to fit your leg routine into your workout schedule is to couple legs with upper body workouts. For instance, work the quads the day you do your arms and shoulders. Work the calves and hams on the back and chest day. Mix it up to keep it fresh and efficient.
